Fostering / Adoption

It is necessary to notify your Fostering Organisation of any potential fostering or adoption interest / arrangements. The Social workers will be able to support you & will make regular visits to check that everything is fine.

You need to recognise that looking after / parenting someone else's child is a serious/dedicated job in itself, & it is time consuming.

You are likely be required to liaise with the original parents. If so make sure it is safe for you & your foster child & a supervised space is provided for the meeting if necessary.

The Social Workers will want to look at a range of issues such as how the child feels about the arrangements, their health & educational needs, contact with their parents & your suitability as a carer. Be as honest as possible because this will enable you to learn a lot & to participate productively in some useful training. You also need to assess the social worker in order to feel comfortable that they operate with integrity & intelligence, rather than simply following a procedure. If you do not feel right then have the courage to withdraw & search for a better team to liaise with.
